Western Sicily: From the Mountains to the Sea — and Back Again

A Journey of Flavor, Culture, Nature, Relaxation and Connection

May 2026 - 9 Nights / 10 Days

This page describes the experiential vision curated by Sips of Sicily and is intended for inspirational and illustrative purposes only.Final details are confirmed individually with independent local partners.

From the turquoise shores of Castellammare del Golfo to the stone villages of the Madonie Mountains, and ending with a sun-drenched finale in Terrasini, this journey blends Sicily’s essence — food, friendship, and timeless beauty — into one unforgettable adventure.

Base 1: Castellammare del Golfo (5 Nights)

A postcard-perfect fishing town where pastel buildings meet the Tyrrhenian Sea — the perfect home base for exploring Western Sicily’s coastal wonders.

Day 1 – Arrival in Palermo Castellammare del Golfo

Benvenuti in Sicilia!
Upon arrival at Palermo Airport, your private driver will whisk you along the sun-drenched coastline to Castellammare del Golfo, your seaside home for the next five nights.

Check into your boutique BnB, unpack, and take a moment to breathe in the salty air and soft rhythm of the sea. The afternoon is yours — wander the charming lanes of town, browse the open-air shops, or sip your first Sicilian espresso (or perhaps a chilled glass of local wine) as you settle into island time.

If you prefer, enjoy a short nap before joining the group as evening falls. Together, we’ll gather for a welcome aperitivo and dinner at a local trattoria overlooking the harbor, where flickering lights reflect on the water and every dish tells a story of Sicily.

The adventure begins — relaxed, authentic, and full of promise.

Castellammare del Golfo

Day 2 – Erice, Trapani & Scopello

After breakfast, ascend by cable car to the fairytale mountaintop town of Erice, where cobblestone streets are perfumed with almond pastries and framed by sweeping sea views.

Wander through artisan shops, visit the Castello di Venere, and pause at a local Pasticceria to taste the village’s famous Genovesi alla Crema. Enjoy lunch at a panoramic trattoria, where each dish comes with a view that stretches all the way to the Egadi Islands.

In the afternoon, we descend to Trapani, where elegant palazzi line the seafront and coral workshops preserve centuries-old traditions. Stroll through the historic quarter, sip an espresso by the port, and take in the golden light that dances on the Tyrrhenian horizon.

As evening approaches, return inland through the countryside to Balata di Baida, a quiet hamlet surrounded by olive groves and rolling hills, and make a short stop at the Castello di Baida, a medieval gem steeped in history and charm.

Continue to Scopello, a postcard-perfect coastal village overlooking the famed Tonara di Scopello cliffs. Here, gather for dinner at a local trattoria, savoring fresh seafood, local wine, and the warm glow of the setting sun over the sea — the perfect close to your first full day in Sicily.

Day 3 – Segesta, Calatafimi & the Ancient Terme Segestane

This morning begins at Segesta, where the majestic Doric Temple stands in timeless grace, surrounded by golden hills and wildflowers swaying in the breeze. Wander among the ruins and take in the sweeping views from the Greek Theater, where ancient voices once echoed across the valley — a breathtaking reminder of Sicily’s mythic past.

To deepen the experience, the archaeological site is explored with a licensed local guide from the park, who shares its history, legends, and cultural significance.

Continue to Calatafimi for a leisurely farm-to-table lunch at a local agriturismo, where every bite — from hand-rolled pasta to sun-ripened vegetables and rich olive oil — celebrates the spirit of Sicilian land and tradition.

As the day mellows into evening, we make our way to the Terme Segestane, natural hot springs revered since antiquity for their healing and restorative powers. Slip into the hot, mineral-rich waters as the sun dips low — steam rising gently into the evening air — and feel centuries of history and serenity embrace you.

Return to Castellammare del Golfo renewed and relaxed, with the night free to wander, dine, and discover your own seaside corner of Sicily.

Day 4 –  Mazara del Vallo & Marsala

Follow the southern coast where the sea shimmers and palm trees sway toward Mazara del Vallo, a town where Sicilian soul meets North African spirit.

Wander through the vibrant Kasbah district, a labyrinth of hand-painted tiles, narrow alleys, and open doorways spilling with color and life. Step inside the Dancing Satyr Museum, where the legendary bronze statue — pulled from the depths of the Mediterranean — seems almost to move beneath the light.

Sit down to a fragrant Cous-Cous di Pesce lunch, rich with saffron, citrus, and the salt of the sea.

In the afternoon, continue to Marsala, where golden light and sea air fill the ancient cellars of Florio Winery. Sip and savor their celebrated vintages surrounded by oak barrels and stories that stretch back centuries.

As day fades, stop at the Stagnone Lagoon, where salt mounds glow pink beneath the setting sun — a perfect photo moment before returning a relaxed group dinner where the night hums softly with sea breeze and Sicilian warmth.

Day 5 – The Sea or the Mountains

Weather permitting, we’ll first attempt Option 1, a full day sailing adventure. If conditions aren’t ideal, we’ll defer to Option 2, a beautiful day of hiking and nature.

Option 1 – Full-Day Sailing: Egadi Islands
Set out early aboard your private sailboat bound for the Egadi Islands. Glide across turquoise waters toward Favignana, famous for its pastel harbor and island charm.

We’ll dock and enjoy a relaxed lunch in Favignana, followed by time to explore or simply take in the coastal scenery as we continue sailing to Levanzo, the smallest and most peaceful of the islands.

Though it may be too cool to swim, the serenity of the sea and the rhythm of the sails make this a day to remember.

This experience is delivered by a licensed local skipper and independent maritime provider, selected by Sips of Sicily for their professionalism and safety standards.

Option 2 – Zingaro Nature Reserve Hike

If the sea doesn’t cooperate, we’ll trade waves for wildflowers with a scenic walk through the Zingaro Nature Reserve — a stunning coastal trail of cliffs, sea views, and fresh mountain air.

After entering the reserve, guests are free to explore at their own pace, walking the trails, discovering hidden coves, or resting by the sea, following the natural rhythm of the landscape.

Enjoy a rustic picnic lunch surrounded by nature, then as evening approaches, enjoy a local dinner before returning to Castellammare for a restful night.

Base 2: Madonie Mountains (2 Nights)

Where stone villages meet clouds and every meal tastes like it was made with love.

Day 6 – From Sea to Summit: Cefalù to Gangi

This morning, we bid farewell to the coast and journey inland through rolling golden hills and olive groves, where the air grows cooler and life begins to slow.

Our first stop is Cefalù, a luminous seaside gem where medieval lanes spill toward a sparkling bay beneath the watchful gaze of its majestic Norman Cathedral. Take time to wander cobblestone streets, breathe in the salt air, and enjoy a leisurely lunch overlooking the sea, where every view feels softly painted in light.

Departing Cefalù, we head directly to a local vineyard in the countryside near Gangi, arriving in time for a two-hour wine tasting set against spectacular mountain views.

Here, we savor locally produced wines paired with regional cheeses, surrounded by open skies and the serene beauty of the Madonie landscape — hosted by the vineyard’s own team, who share their craft and traditions.

By late afternoon, we continue on to Gangi, one of Italy’s most enchanting hilltop villages, crowned “Il Borgo più Bello d’Italia” in 2014. Ancient stone lanes wind through arches and sunlit terraces, opening to sweeping views of the Madonie Mountains and, on clear days, distant Mount Etna.

We arrive at our bnb for a relaxed, late check-in, with time to freshen up and unwind before the evening unfolds. As dusk settles, we stroll through Gangi’s quiet streets, taking in its timeless charm before gathering for a home-style dinner hosted by local partners, where homemade bread, mountain wine, and recipes passed down through generations set the table.

Candlelight flickers, laughter drifts through the air, and the warmth of Sicilian hospitality gently sets the tone for the days ahead.

Day 7 – Choose Your Adventure: Zip-Line Thrills or Gole di Tiberio

Wake to the aroma of fresh espresso and crisp mountain air before setting out for a day that lets you choose your own pace—and your own kind of wonder.

Option One: High-Flying Adventure
For the thrill-seekers, harness up and soar across the valley on a single or double zip-line, suspended high above the Madonie landscape. The views stretch endlessly beneath you, offering a rush of adrenaline paired with unforgettable panoramas. For those craving an extra jolt, experience one of Europe’s largest outdoor swings—a heart-pounding moment guaranteed to leave you exhilarated and smiling.

This experience is operated by an authorized local adventure provider, who manages all technical, safety, and equipment requirements.

Option Two: Nature & Stillness
For a more tranquil experience, journey to the Gole di Tiberio, a hidden canyon sculpted over centuries by the Pollina River. Surrounded by towering stone walls, flowing water, and open sky, this peaceful natural sanctuary reveals Sicily’s quieter, more contemplative beauty.

The visit is facilitated in collaboration with local operators and follows the natural access regulations of the area.

Midday, both paths reunite for a rustic picnic lunch, featuring local salami, cheeses, fresh bread, and wine—enjoyed amid breathtaking views that invite you to linger, sip, and savor the moment.

As the day winds down, we return to Gangi, where evening brings cooler air and glowing skies. The day concludes with a spectacular supper, shared together as Mount Etna looms on the horizon—an unforgettable finale of flavor, scenery, and Sicilian magic.

Base 3: Terrasini (2 Nights)

A serene coastal finale — the perfect place to rest, reflect, and soak in the last Sicilian sunshine.

Day 8 –  Madonie, Gangi Terrasini

Begin your morning with a hike through the Madonie Regional Park, where ancient oaks, wildflowers, and sweeping sea views capture the raw, natural spirit of Sicily.

Guests explore the park at their own pace, following the natural trails and rhythms of the landscape.

After the hike, return to the BnB for a fresh up and late check out.

By late afternoon, continue to Terrasini, your final seaside retreat. Check in, breathe in the salt air, and let the rhythm of the waves guide you into a slower pace.

Enjoy dinner on your own tonight, — the perfect moment to unwind and reflect on the journey so far, with the sea once again at your side.

Day 9 – Terrasini, Cooking Class & Farewell Dinner

Today is all about embracing Sicily’s slower rhythm. Sleep in, enjoy a long, leisurely breakfast, and spend the late morning by the sea, where the waves roll gently against the shore and the breeze carries the scent of salt and citrus.

After days filled with discovery, flavor, and connection, this is your moment to pause — to stroll the promenade, sip an Aperol Spritz at a seaside café, or simply watch the sunlight dance across the water. Take time to reflect, begin to pack, and savor the calm before tomorrow’s departure.

Miday, we’ll journey to Borgo Parrini, one of Sicily’s most romantic and colorful villages, in collaboration with local partners who host and facilitate the experience.

Afterward, we’ll join a Sicilian cooking class where a local chef welcomes you for a hands-on cooking experience, to learn the secrets of Sicilian home cooking before sitting down together to savor the meal you’ve created — laughter and stories included.

The experience is hosted by an independent local chef, who manages all culinary activities.

As the sun dips behind the cliffs, raise your glass to friendship, laughter, and the unforgettable beauty of Sicily — a place that stays with you long after you’ve gone.

Day 10 –  Arrivederci Sicilia

Depending on your departure time, enjoy one last leisurely breakfast before your short 15-minute private transfer to Palermo Airport, provided or arranged directly by the accommodation.

As you depart, carry with you the warmth of Sicily — its flavors, its light, and its spirit that always welcomes you home again.

Note: In true Sicilian fashion, timing remains flexible. Daily start and end times are coordinated by your host and may shift slightly due to weather, road conditions, or the natural rhythm of the day. While we aim to follow the itinerary as planned, occasional adjustments may occur. Should changes be necessary, your host will thoughtfully adapt the experience to ensure it remains rich, seamless, and deeply enjoyable—so you can relax knowing the heart of the journey is always preserved, and you won’t be disappointed.
